Today, NAOS is engaged in research into the natural history of health at the confluence of the medical sciences and the humanities (biology, medicine, dermatology, anthropology, archaeology, psychology, philosophy and art history) and is delighted to announce the first Edition of the NAOS ECOBIOLOGY AWARD.
The result of a partnership between 2 men who share the same convictions, Jean-Noël THOREL, pharmacist-biologist and founder of NAOS, and Dr Philippe CHARLIER, physician-anthropologist and former Director of Research and Education at the Musée du Quai Branly- Jacques Chirac. This prize is intended to reward work already completed and/or published, or a project based on the integrative approach of Ecobiology.
NAOS is the pioneer of ECOBIOLOGY, a holistic approach inspired by the living. With Ecobiology, all our products are designed to protect the skin’s ecosystem and strengthen its natural mechanisms. For a naturally strong, beautiful and healthy skin. Lastingly.
Wary of multiplying active ingredients, this approach seeks to help the skin strengthen itself and adapt to its environment. Different from traditional cosmetics, the ecobiological approach acts deep within the skin, rather than on the surface.
Different from traditional cosmetics, the ecobiological approach acts deep within the skin, rather than on the surface. A therapeutic dimension is thereby added to the cosmetic dimension.
One of the founding principles of ecobiology is biomimetism, which allows us to observe, understand and mimic natural mechanisms to develop effective and sustainable solutions. Ecobiology is therefore a deeply respectful approach that makes the link between the biology of the skin and the ecology of the skin.
At the heart of our products, there is an ambition to care for our users, to understand their skin and what it needs. Driven by NAOS for the last 40 years, ecobiology is an approach inspired by life that relies on 4 principles.
We consider skin as an ecosystem, full of different types of cells that live together, and interact to keep the balance of this ecosystem. And like each part of our planet, our skin has its own ecology that can be affected by external challenges. It must be preserved. At NAOS, in order to create formulas that leave a positive footprint within the skin ecosystem, we prefer pure ingredients, rightly dosed, and naturally assimilated.
Our skin is a smart organ, permanently sensing the environment, evolving and adapting to changes. To be able to do this, the skin has developed very smart biological mechanisms, that are tremendously efficient and sustainable. At NAOS, we don’t want to block or to force the skin to do anything, therefore we interact with its natural mechanisms, only when needed, to help the skin to adapt and find its balance itself.
When skin imbalances appear, it is important to take time to look at the global picture, to understand what happens and how to help. Because if you only act on the visible signs, your action will be quick but will vanish as quickly. According to Ecobiology, we act on the root causes of skin imbalances, as well as their consequences, to provide a lasting efficacy.
Thanks to billions of years of evolution, life deeply knows how to do things. At NAOS, before trying to create new technologies, we observe what nature does best to develop effective and sustainable solutions. And naturally we first look at the innate abilities of the healthy skin as our first source of inspiration.
In 2020, we decided to take part in a unique project between NAOS, Cosmetics Europe and the BBC Studios Network, inviting the public to go behind the scenes of the cosmetic and skincare sector.
Beyond their functional benefits, skincare products contributes to our health and well-being, as well as our self-esteem.
In this video entitled “Ecobiology is reinventing beauty”, Georgia (GG) Sargeant shares her story, Doctor Skotnicki brings her expertise on skincare and our NAOS R&D team, Aurélie Guyoux and Eloïse Collet explain NAOS unique approach.

The first Ecobiology Summit took place in Split, Croatia, on April 18-19 2018; it was organized by NAOS in partnership with the MedILS, The Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences. 150 participants and 50 international journalists participated in 8 round-tables with scientific experts and Nobel laureates. The debates were on the definition of ecobiology and its role in upcoming challenges. To get an in-depth view of this event (www.theecobiologysummit.com)
